He was born in Delf, The Netherlands, in 1632.
Before he turned six his father and two of his younger sisters had died, leaving his mother alone with five young children.

She remarried in 1640 and Antoine was sent to a boarding school. Soon he was invited to live with an uncle of his.
At age 16 his stepfather died so Antoine's mother decided it was time for him to learn a trade.
He secured an apprenticeship in Amsterdam as a casher an bookkeeper. In 1653 he saw his first microscope - a magnifying glass.
He soon acquired one for his own use. When he left Amsterdam in 1654 and moved back to Delf for the rest of his life,
he started his own drapery business. That same year he married Berber (Barbara) de Mey and became registered as Antonie Leeuwenhoek.
Four of his five children died young, his wife died in 1666 and he remarried in 1671 to Cornelia Swalmius.
He outlived her too, she died in 1694 and he in 1723.

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek did'nt learn Latin, or attend university.
